Cold Calling Script

/koʊld ˈkɔː.lɪŋ skrɪpt/ noun

Definition

A cold calling script gives a caller a tested structure so they don't have to improvise every call. Good scripts are short and sound like a person talking, not a sales letter. Most experienced callers treat the script as a guide: they know the key lines by heart and adapt the rest to the conversation.

How It Works

A typical B2B script has five parts: a short opener, a one-sentence reason for the call, one or two questions to check fit, a clear ask for a meeting, and prepared answers to the brush-offs callers hear most, such as 'send me an email' or 'we're all set'. Teams review call recordings to see which lines work and update the script every few weeks.

Avoid scripts that read like a brochure. If a line sounds odd when you say it out loud, cut it.

A useful test is to read the script to a colleague who doesn't know the product. If they can't repeat back why you called, the reason for the call needs work..
