SDR Salary in South Africa: The 2026 Benchmark
What SDRs, sales reps and call centre agents earn in South Africa in 2026, in rand and dollars, plus the legal extras and the full monthly cost of hiring one yourself.

The average SDR salary in South Africa in 2026 is about R11,900 to R15,200 a month in base pay, or roughly $720 to $920, based on PayScale's averages for inside sales reps and business development reps. Call centre agents earn less, about R7,800 a month on average, while experienced reps with commission earn well above the averages. On top of salary, budget for the legal extras, any evening-shift costs, and the time it takes to hire and manage the rep yourself.
This guide gives the 2026 numbers for each role close to an SDR, explains how to read them, lists what South African law adds on top of salary, and works out the full monthly cost of hiring a rep directly.

SDR Salary in South Africa at a Glance

There's no single published figure for an SDR salary in South Africa, because local job titles vary. The closest roles are business development representative and inside sales representative. Here is what each earns on average, with the source for every number:
| Role | Average pay | Per month | In US dollars | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Business development rep | R182,000 a year | R15,167 | $920 | PayScale, 24 profiles, May 2026 |
| Sales representative | R12,207 a month | R12,207 | $740 | Indeed, 4,200 salaries, October 2026 |
| Inside sales rep | R142,913 a year | R11,909 | $722 | PayScale, 209 profiles, July 2026 |
| Call centre agent | R93,781 a year | R7,815 | $474 | PayScale, 281 profiles, June 2026 |
| Legal minimum, full time | R30.23 an hour | R5,240 | $318 | National minimum wage, from 1 March 2026 |
Dollar figures use R16.49 to $1, the exchange rate on 14 October 2026. Monthly figures divide yearly pay by 12. The minimum wage row assumes 40 hours a week.
How to Read These Numbers
Treat these averages as a starting point for an SDR salary in South Africa, not a price list. Keep four things in mind:
- They're self-reported. PayScale and Indeed collect pay from people who share it. That's useful, but it isn't an official survey.
- Some samples are small. The business development rep figure comes from 24 profiles, so one or two unusual salaries can move it. The inside sales and call centre figures rest on more than 200 profiles each.
- Base pay isn't total pay. PayScale puts total pay for business development reps between R19,000 and R491,000 a year, including commission.
- Your role may pay more. Reps who call international buyers in fluent English, on evening shifts, may expect more than local averages. Check current job postings for the exact role you're hiring for before you make an offer.
Pay by Experience
PayScale also breaks down total pay, including bonus and overtime, by career stage:
| Role and experience | Average total pay a year | Per month |
|---|---|---|
| Inside sales rep, under 1 year | R101,637 | R8,470 |
| Inside sales rep, 1 to 4 years | R121,642 | R10,137 |
| Business development rep, 1 to 4 years | R144,000 | R12,000 |
| Business development rep, 5 to 9 years | R296,970 | R24,748 |
Pay for business development reps roughly doubles between the early and middle stages of a career. The samples behind each row are small, between 14 and 27 salaries, so use them to see the shape of the curve rather than to set an exact offer.
Pay by Role: What Each Job Does
Much of the spread in pay comes down to the job title, which is why there's no single SDR salary in South Africa. Match the role to the job you need done.
Call Centre Agent
Handles inbound or outbound calls, often from a script, at high volume. Many work in customer service rather than sales. Good call centre agents can grow into cold calling, but they usually need training on research, objection handling and booking meetings.
Inside Sales Rep
Sells by phone and email from a desk. Depending on the company, an inside sales rep may book meetings, run demos or close smaller deals. This is the closest local match to an SDR for many employers.
SDR or Business Development Rep
Finds and contacts new prospects, qualifies them and books meetings for a closer. This is the role most international companies mean when they hire an SDR. It pays more because it needs more judgment: researching accounts, handling brush-offs and deciding who's worth a meeting.
Commission and Bonuses
Commission can add a lot to an SDR salary in South Africa. PayScale lists commission for South African business development reps of up to R85,000 a year, or about R7,100 a month at the top end. The range starts at zero, so treat that figure as a ceiling, not an average.
A simple, fair plan for an SDR looks like this:
- A solid base salary that covers the rep's living costs without commission.
- A bonus for each qualified meeting that actually happens, not for every meeting booked.
- A written definition of "qualified" that both of you agree on before the first call.
- A review after 90 days, once you know what a realistic monthly number is.
Paying only for booked meetings pushes reps to book anyone who says yes. Our guide to B2B appointment setting explains how to define a qualified meeting.
What South African Law Adds on Top of Salary
If you employ a rep directly, South African law adds costs and rules on top of the SDR salary itself:
- Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF). SARS requires 2% of pay: 1% deducted from the employee and 1% paid by the employer. Contributions stop at earnings of R17,712 a month, so the employer's share is at most R177.12 a month.
- Skills Development Levy (SDL). SARS charges 1% of total payroll once an employer expects to pay more than R500,000 in salaries over the next 12 months. One rep on an average salary won't reach that alone.
- Annual leave. The Basic Conditions of Employment Act gives at least 21 consecutive days of paid annual leave a year, which is about 15 working days.
- Sick leave. Over each 36-month cycle, an employee gets paid sick leave equal to the days they'd normally work in six weeks. For a five-day week, that's 30 days.
- Public holidays. An employer can only require work on a public holiday by agreement.
- Minimum wage. From 1 March 2026, no one can be paid less than R30.23 an ordinary hour.
This is a plain summary, not legal advice. Check the rules with a South African payroll provider or labor lawyer before you hire.
Evening Shifts for US Clients
Evening shifts change the real cost of an SDR salary in South Africa. South Africa is one or two hours ahead of London, so a UK business day is a normal day shift. US hours are different. A 9am to 5pm day in New York runs from about 15:00 to 23:00 in South Africa, or 16:00 to midnight when US clocks go back in November.
That matters because the Basic Conditions of Employment Act treats any work after 18:00 as night work. An employer may only ask for it if:
- The employee agrees to work those hours.
- They're paid an allowance or work shorter hours. The Act doesn't set the amount, so agree on one in writing.
- Transport is available between home and work at the start and end of the shift.
If the rep regularly works more than an hour past 23:00, at least five times a month, the employer must also tell them about the health and safety risks of the work and, if they ask, pay for a medical examination.
Even UK hours can touch this rule. In the UK winter, a 9am to 5pm London day ends at 19:00 in South Africa, so the last hour counts as night work.
Shift Times by Client Market
South Africa doesn't change its clocks, so the shift your rep works depends on where your prospects are and the time of year. Here is a 9am to 5pm day in each market, shown in South African time:
| Your prospects are in | Northern summer | Northern winter | Counts as night work? |
|---|---|---|---|
| London | 10:00 to 18:00 | 11:00 to 19:00 | Only the last hour in winter |
| Berlin or Stockholm | 09:00 to 17:00 | 10:00 to 18:00 | No |
| Dubai | 07:00 to 15:00 | 07:00 to 15:00 | No |
| New York | 15:00 to 23:00 | 16:00 to 00:00 | Yes, from 18:00 |
| Los Angeles | 18:00 to 02:00 | 19:00 to 03:00 | Yes, the whole shift |
The US and Europe change their clocks on different weeks in March and October, so for a few weeks a year the gap is an hour different. This is why South Africa is usually the first choice for UK and European prospects, and why we suggest the Philippines or Latin America for the US West Coast. Our cold calling laws by country page covers the calling rules in each of these markets.
The Full Monthly Cost: A Worked Example
Here is an example of what one SDR could cost you each month if you employ them directly, on a salary close to the average SDR salary in South Africa. The allowance, transport and backup power figures are assumptions for illustration, not data.
| Cost | Per month |
|---|---|
| Base salary | R15,000 |
| UIF, employer's 1% | R150 |
| Night-work allowance for US hours (assumed 10%) | R1,500 |
| Transport after late shifts (assumed) | R1,500 |
| Backup power and mobile data (assumed) | R600 |
| Total | R18,750, about $1,137 |
That total still leaves out commission, a laptop and headset, a phone line, the hours you spend recruiting and testing candidates, and the management time a new rep needs every day. Power cuts have hit South Africa in the past, so check that any rep you hire has backup power and a second internet connection before they start.
For a fair comparison with a local hire, work out the cost per meeting rather than the cost per month. Our guide to in-house SDR vs outsourced cold calling shows how.
How to Make a Fair Offer
A fair offer starts from the average SDR salary in South Africa for the role. The rep should be able to live on the base without commission, and you should be able to afford it if the first months are slow. Five steps get you there:
- Check live job postings for the same title, city and shift. Averages lag the market, and postings show what competing employers offer this month.
- Set the base from the table above. Start near the inside sales average for a junior rep, and near the business development average for someone with outbound experience.
- Price the shift. If the rep works US hours, agree on a night-work allowance or shorter hours, and how they'll get home, before they start.
- Add a simple bonus for each qualified meeting that actually happens, capped so it can't swamp the base.
- Put it in writing, with a 90-day review date when you'll check the numbers together.
An example offer, with made-up numbers: a base of R16,000 a month, a R1,600 allowance for US East Coast hours, and a R250 bonus for each qualified meeting held, up to R5,000 a month. If the rep holds 12 qualified meetings in a month, they earn R20,600 before tax, and you know exactly what each meeting cost you in bonus.
How to Hire From Outside South Africa
Whatever SDR salary in South Africa you settle on, you need a legal way to pay it. If your company isn't registered in South Africa, you can't simply add a rep to a South African payroll. Most foreign companies choose one of three routes:
- An employer of record. A local company employs the rep for you, runs payroll and handles UIF and leave, for a monthly fee on top of salary.
- An independent contractor. The rep invoices you directly. It's simpler, but South African tax rules have tests for when a contractor should be taxed as an employee, so get advice before you rely on it.
- A provider that places the caller for you. The provider recruits, contracts and pays the caller, and you get a dedicated rep working your list.
Whichever route you choose, test candidates on real role-play calls before you hire. Our guide to evaluating sales reps with role-play scenarios works for South African candidates too.
South Africa vs the Philippines and India
An SDR salary in South Africa isn't the lowest you'll find, but South Africa is often the best fit for some markets:
- UK and European hours on a day shift. Callers work normal hours for clients in the UK, Ireland and continental Europe.
- English, often as a first language. That helps with buyers who hang up quickly on an accent they aren't used to.
- A long-established call centre industry serving the UK and other English-speaking markets.
The Philippines has the largest pool of experienced outsourced callers and suits North America and Asia-Pacific. India has our lowest price per caller and suits the Gulf. Hiring on Your Own vs Using Switchstack
Paying an SDR salary in South Africa directly is cheaper on paper. Using Switchstack costs more each month, but you skip the recruiting, the contracts and the risk of starting again if the first hire doesn't work out:
| Hiring on your own | Switchstack Hire a Caller | |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly cost | About $1,100 or more (worked example above) | $2,199 per caller |
| Finding and testing candidates | You | Us, with role-play calls on your offer |
| Contracts and payments | You, or an employer of record | Us |
| Backup power and internet checks | You | Us, before the caller starts |
| If the hire doesn't work out | You start again | Free replacement in the first 30 days |
| Notice period | Set by employment law | 30 days, month to month |
If you'd rather we run the calling too, We Call for You costs $2,899 a month with a South African caller, including the script, daily management and a weekly report. Both services have no setup fee, and every new client gets 20% off the first 2 months.
See how it works on our South African cold callers page, or check the calling rules for the UK if that's where your prospects are.
